Kinetic Technologies Simplifies USB Type-C Dual Role Port Design with the Industry’s First 5A/100W, Power Delivery Protection Switch with Single-Path Sink/Source Capability

New Low Resistance, 20mΩ Protected, Bidirectional Load Switch Integrates Single-Path Sink/Source Capability with IEC ±100V Surge and ±8kV/±15kV Level 4 ESD Protection

Las Vegas, NV – January 5, 2023 – Power management and video/audio interface IC leader Kinetic Technologies announced the industry’s first integrated USB Type-C Power Delivery protection switch that simplifies and shrinks existing discrete designs in Dual Role Port (DRP) applications; a crucial feature in today’s flagship notebook computers and docking stations. By integrating a bidirectional, reverse-blocking “ideal diode,” low resistance MOSFET switch, and multiple sensing and protection features, the KTS1865 can reduce board space, minimize the bill-of-materials (BOM) and enhance system reliability by helping to enable robust protection against abnormal operating conditions.

“The KTS1865 is a device at the forefront of protection switches that can finally allow designers to simplify their Dual Role Port designs, and at the same time, can provide a reliable, cost effective, and robust solution,” said Erik Ogren, Kinetic Technologies’ Senior Director of Marketing. “In existing designs, customers must often use one current sink and one current source device per port. When the USB port is in sink mode, the source device is not needed and vice versa. Kinetic designers using our industry leading IP for both sink and source switches have combined both functions into a single switch without compromise. Customers appreciate the lower component count and the space savings this can provide.”

The KTS1865 is a low resistance, high-current, bidirectional load switch optimized to protect USB Type-C Power Delivery (PD) ports that sink and/or source up to 100W at 20V, while at the same time withstand 29V on VBUS. Mode control is provided by two logic pins that enable or disable the switch, while also setting the device into either SINK or SOURCE mode. Slew-rate controlled turn-on with current limiting is designed to prevent excessive large in-rush currents while maintaining Fast Role Swap (FRS) capability. Operating from an input voltage range of 3V to 23V, the KTS1865 integrates a port-side TVS for IEC surge and ESD Level 4 protection. It also includes several additional protection features including overvoltage protection, “ideal diode” reverse current protection with fast recovery, over-current protection, programmable current limit, and over-temperature protection. The “ideal diode” reverse current protection is also bidirectional and automatically oriented to match the switch’s logic-controlled sink or source mode, making it possible for two or more charging ports in a “power OR” configuration to be connected to a single charger without back-feeding the lower voltage input source.

The single-path sink/source switch architecture of the KTS1865 is particularly well suited to meet the system design challenges in docking stations, conferencing systems, and charger-per-port notebook computers.

Packaged in a small 2.64 x 2.14mm, 20-bump Wafer-Level Chip-Scale Package (WLCSP), the KTS1865 is available now with production targeted for Q2 2023.

Las Vegas, NV – January 5, 2023 – Power management and video/audio interface IC leader, Kinetic Technologies, announced today its first dedicated IR LED driver focused on the growing market for video doorbells and security cameras, where night-time clarity is mandatory. The KTD2041 is the first IR LED driver to use an adaptive buck converter to control the current sink voltage headroom, thereby minimizing the power dissipation and optimizing the system efficiency to extend battery life.

Featuring nine independently controlled, high-precision, low-dropout current sinks, the KTD2041 uses a 1MHz I2C control interface to provide 6-bit linear dimming control with increments of 0.5mA up to the maximum current of 32mA/LED. Packaged in a tiny 3mm x 3mm UQFN-20 package, the KTD2041 uses adaptive output voltage control based on the headroom voltages required by the LED current sinks to minimize power consumption. The 1MHz (default) high-efficiency buck regulator implements adaptive on-time control, minimizing the component count and allowing the use of one very small inductor and capacitor.

“The KTD2041 further demonstrates Kinetic’s commitment to providing application-specific LED drivers, which are tailored and optimized for a specific customer need,” says Erik Ogren, Kinetic Technologies’ Senior Director of Marketing. “This device is ideal for use in battery-powered video cameras, such as those used in video doorbells or security cameras that utilize advanced video processing techniques. Each IR LED channel on the KTD2041 can be turned on or off dynamically in order to focus the infrared light in a particular direction, thereby optimizing efficiency.”

The KTD2041 has extensive integrated protection features including cycle-by-cycle current limit, input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), output over-voltage protection, LED fault (open or short) protection, and thermal shutdown protection.

While the KTD2041 is dedicated to drive IR LEDs, its low 100mV current sink dropout, it is also suitable to drive higher VF RGB LEDs. The KTD2042 derivative is pin-to-pin and functionally compatible but modified to drive three RGB LEDs at 32mA/Ch or for higher current applications. Multiple LED channels can be paralleled to provide a higher maximum output per LED.

KTD2041 and KTD2042 are available now. Visit Kinetic Technologies for further information.
